What do Sustainability Leaders and Learning & Development Leaders have in common?

Whatdo Sustainability Leaders and Learning & Development Leaders have in common? More than you might think!

As someone who works across both corporate learning and development (L&D) and Sustainability functions, I’ve noticed striking similarities between these roles. Here are some thoughts I’d love to share:

🟢 Cost Centers or Value Drivers?

Too often, both L&D and Sustainability teams are seen as cost centers rather than strategic value creators. When treated this way, their potential to drive innovation, engagement, and performance is vastly underutilized.

🟢 Performance Boosters (misunderstood)

L&D drives performance by enhancing skills and knowledge, while Sustainability enhances performance by embedding systems thinking, a long-term vision, and multistakeholder perspectives. Both are catalysts for organizational growth and evolution.

🟢 Diagnosing Needs (solvers)

Great learning starts with identifying the right training needs. Effective sustainability strategies begin by diagnosing gaps and understanding stakeholder priorities. Both require precision and clarity to deliver results.

🟢 The Data Dilemma  (analytics)

Tracking impact is a challenge for both teams. Completion rates for training and published sustainability reports are a start, but true success lies in leveraging data analytics and insights to embed learning or sustainability deeply into organizational culture and PROVE the positive organizational outcomes.

🟢 No you again! (no choice have to work with everyone).

L&D and Sustainability are often seen as "extra work" by employees — an added task rather than integral to day-to-day roles. Shifting this perspective is key to fostering engagement and alignment...To do this message has to be very clear from the top and integrate strategy and implementation should follow.

🟢 Culture is Key (many companies are not there as focus is elsewhere)

Both functions thrive in an environment where objectives are clearly tied to strategy, and culture promotes collaboration, feedback, and accountability. When employees feel empoweredinspired, and supported, organizations achieve alignmentagility, and long-term success...in complex world we live in this is a sign of resilience and ability to  overcome new challenges.

🧑‍💻 People are an organization’s greatest asset. L&D and Sustainability teams have the potential to nurture this asset, preparing organizations to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world.

What’s your experience working with or leading these teams? I would love to see more strategic collaboration between L&D and ESG teams and ED4S • Education for Sustainability team is also here to help bridge the gap and supercharge sustainable learning organization culture.
